Reinhardt articulates what I’ve been thinking of the U.S. debate over health care (emphasis mine):
The emerging political battle at this crossroads is unlikely to be styled in stark terms such as “rationing by income class” or “one-class” versus “two-class” medicine. Instead, it will be styled as a debate over “market competition versus government regulation”; as [...]
The op-ed article I wrote for the Lansing State Journal no longer appears on the newspaper’s website, but Mom graciously provides me with scanned version. Full-size version here.
(This one is for you Nimithri).
The picture I snapped above is of a National Geographic Survey map found on the wall in our hotel room in Cuenca, Ecuador. The map was printed in the U.S.
There are indeed many subtle, yet noticeable, differences between life in the U.S. and the U.K. In the U.K., for example, [...]
Although it would be amazing if candy corn grew on trees, alas, these flowers are not the delicious Halloween treat you and I crave/devour/gluttonize each October 31 starting at 6:00 p.m. My internet-y efforts at identifying the particular type of flower has not proved fruitful (bad pun intended), but the picture was taken in in [...]
We found this delicious little computer store near downtown Cuenca, Ecuador. Why a person would name their store after a virus is beyond me. At first I thought maybe there is spectacular translation problem going on here—that maybe a virus in Spanish really doesn’t mean the same thing at all. Heck, maybe viruses are good!
However, [...]

On a slightly unrelated note, I’ve been told that houses in this neighborhood [...]
Note: This missive turned out longer than anticipated. The take-home message is that I’m currently volunteering in Ecuador, I’m having a great time, my Spanish is improving (though it had nowhere to go but up), and I’ll be posting a new photo every day henceforth if you want to check in. ¡Adios!
Quito at night.
Hi everyone [...]
Here is an opinion article I wrote for the Lansing State Journal, my hometown newspaper. I was happy to see the piece was included with relatively few changes from the editors (a comma here, a dash there), but I would like to say I was less happy to see the title altered.

1 I notice JPMorgan promotional books piled high in one of LSE’s computer labs. Might as well take a look, right?
2 Flipping through the book, I come across this page. It has a picture of a group of summer interns with Steve Black, CEO of JPMorgan.
3 I inspect more closely—wait a minute, that photo looks [...]
